Kepler Track Stoat Traps "Sponsor a Trap"
In 2007 the Kepler Challenge Committee put 252 boxes, with 2 traps in each, around approximately 80% of the Kepler Track. The only section not covered was from Luxmore Hut across the tops to the bush-line below Hanging Valley shelter. This section of the Track is about 12 kilometres.
We're aiming to place another 60 traps through this section by November this year. The boxes, with two traps in each, are placed about every 200 metres and cost $140 each.
If you look under "Kepler Bird Song project", you'll see the numbers of stoats and rats plus a few ferrets and indeed feral cats that have been removed from the Kepler track vicinity since 2007. It's well over 1000 introduced predators that would have otherwise been having a big impact on the native birds found in the Kepler Track area. Local people who have been helping out with monthly checks of these traps since its inception often comment on the increase of birdlife found around the track, which in turn hopefully the Kepler runners also enjoy as they run the track on the first Saturday of December every year.
So if you'd like to help out with the purchase of a box or two, please email email@example.com and we'll give you the bank account details to place funds into. We'll even let you know which specific trap is "Yours" so you can check it out for yourself as you run across the tops!!
